 Alfred Brauer – Born: 1894 in Berlin, Germany Died: 1985. “…He had a younger, and more famous, brother Richard Brauer (see below) / Brauer was still in Berlin hoping to be allowed to emigrate in 1938 but there were problems on all sides. Hopf wrote to Richard Brauer, already in the United States in 1938:- “The US Consulate in Berlin declared that [Alfred Brauer] could not receive the so-called ‘professor visa’ (with which one can immediately enter the US) and that according to law it was only for people who were in an academic position during the last two years and that he hadn’t been in such a position!!” / Alfred Brauer did succeed in obtaining permission to enter the United States and temporary employment was organised for him by the Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced German Scholars in New York. We should note in passing that the driving force behind that committee who was responsible for saving Brauer (and many other German academics) was the American Stephen Duggan. He committed suicide in 1950 when he was being investigated during the McCarthy period because of his many connections with foreigners through working for the Emergency Committee.” [<<<this biog writer is in error here: it was Stephen Duggan’s son Laurence Duggan – close friend of Edward R. 24.) Brauer, Richard (1933-1936, 1941, 1944) U of Toronto / Mathematics

Richard Dagobert Brauer, 1901-1977 / “German-American mathematician and educator, a pioneer in the development of algebra theory. He worked with Weyl on several projects including a famous joint paper on spinors (published in 1935 in the American Journal of Mathematics). This work provided a background for Paul Dirac’s theory of the spinning electron within the framework of quantum mechanics. With Nesbitt, Brauer introduced the theory of blocks (1937). Brauer used this to obtain results on finite groups, particularly finite simple groups, and the theory of blocks would play a big part in much of Brauer’s later work.  Martin Buber (February 8, 1878 – June 13, 1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. / Martin (Hebrew name: מָרְדֳּכַי, Mordechai) Buber was born in Vienna to an Orthodox Jewish family. His grandfather, Solomon Buber, in whose house in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) Buber spent much of his childhood, was a renowned scholar of Midrash and Rabbinic Literature. At home Buber spoke Yiddish and German. In 1892, Buber returned to his father’s house in Lemberg. A personal religious crisis led him to break with Jewish religious customs: he started reading Immanuel Kant, Søren Kierkegaard, and Friedrich Nietzsche. The latter two, in particular, inspired him to pursue studies in philosophy. In 1896, Buber went to study in Vienna (philosophy, art history, German studies, philology). In 1898, he joined the Zionist movement, participating in congresses and organizational work. Manfred Bukofzer (19101955) was a GermanAmerican musicologist and humanist. He studied at Heidelberg University and the Stern conservatory in Berlin, but left Germany in 1933, going to Basle, where he received his doctorate. In 1939 he moved to the United States where he remained, becoming a U.S. citizen. In 1936 Walter V. Burg ( Dipl. Ing., Berlin) was appointed to an instructorship under a grant made to the university by the Committee on Displaced German Scholars. The following year he received a permanent appointment with the rank of Associate Professor of Chemistry replacing Mr. Signer. Professor Burg proved to be a versatile and progressive member of the faculty. He had soon instituted a course in Chemical Technology and had taken over the course in Metallurgy, modernizing it and adding laboratory work. Deichmann, Ute, 1951- The Expulsion of Jewish Biochemists from Academia in Nazi Germany Perspectives on Science – Volume 7, Number 1, Spring 1999, pp. 1-86 The MIT Press In contrast to anti-Jewish campaigns at German universities in the 19th century, which met with opposition from liberal scholars, among them prominent chemists, there was no public reaction to the dismissals in 1933. Germany had been an international leader in (bio-)chemistry until the 1930s. Due to a high proportion of Jewish physicists, (bio-)chemistry was strongly affected by the expulsion of scientists. Organic and inorganic chemistry were least affected, while biochemistry suffered most. Polymer chemistry and quantum chemistry, of minor importance among the majority of academic chemists (despite pioneering work by German physicists) was further weakened by the expulsion of renowned scientists. However, a look at the research carried out in Nazi Germany shows that no field of research “emigrated” as such, except research into molecular beams. The reception of emigré (bio-)chemists differed with respect to their field of research and the degree of competition in the host countries. Thus biochemists and physical chemists were accepted at American universities, whereas organic chemists were not. In contrast, they received high positions in Turkey, Palestine/Israel, and Egypt. After WWII, few emigrés were asked to come back. It was to show the world once and for all what he intended to do to the Jews of Germany and to see if anyone in the world would react. / Thousands of synagogues and Jewish businesses were destroyed and approximately 20,000 Jewish men were rounded up and sent to concentration camps on that day merely for the crime of being Jewish. Augsburg sent about 200 men to Dachau on November 10, 1938. This section is being created to tell the story of what happened.  Umberto Moshe David Cassuto (1883–1951), was a rabbi and biblical scholar born in Florence, Italy. / From 1914 to 1925, he was chief rabbi of Florence. / When the 1938 anti-Semitic laws forced him from this position, he moved to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. / his most enduring legacy may be his commentaries on the Hebrew Bible.

Umberto Moshe David Cassuto (1885-1951), Bible scholar. — Born in Florence, Italy, he studied there at the university and the Collegio Rabbinico. After graduating in humanities and receiving his rabbinic diploma, he took up teaching positions in both institutions. At this time his main research was on the history and literature of the Jews of Italy. From 1914 to 1925 Cassuto was chief rabbi of Florence and then in 1925 became professor of Hebrew language and literature in the University of Florence and then took the chair of Hebrew at the University of Rome. Here he began to catalogue the Hebrew manuscripts in the Vatican but the 1938 anti-Semitic laws forced him out of his positions and he continued his academic career at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He edited a Bible with Hebrew commentary that has remained an Israel school classic. His interests focused on Bible exegesis in which he contested the documentary theory of Wellhausen on the origin of the Pentateuch, postulating its redaction to a school around the 10th century BCE.
